Fine Old

Within the jewelry world there are classic pieces that seem to always be in style, however there are also those very unique trends that come around every now and then to really shake things up. High end jewelry or fine jewelry lines are not immune to the impact of trends. Often just having the trend shown within a high end line means that it is moved beyond the trend stage and is now an acceptable fashion accessory or style.

Although gold has been around for centuries, the allure of this precious metal keeps it on top of the latest in fashion trends for all season wear. One of the newer fashion styles to sport gold is the multi-layered necklace. This style is typically in three layers of chain, attaching to the top layer with a single clasp at the back. The three layers or chains, shortest to longest, are separated enough to allow charms, beads or smaller gold pieces to hang between the layers, creating a warm, soft appearance. These stacked type necklaces are ideally suited to various open necklines but can also be worn as an accent to a jacket or over a top with a straight or high neckline. Since they are not long, hanging necklaces they are easy to wear and add a touch of richness.

Another gold high end fashion jewelry trend is the return to the bangle bracelets. These aren’t the old, clunky style of bracelets from the 60’s, rather they are exquisitely crafted with gold wire accents, designs and even gemstones. The bracelets can be worn as singles or can be stacked on the wrist to add color and depth to the gold tones. When stacked these gold bracelets are typically mixed, with wider and narrower bangles, solid and decorated and even different types of metals.

Trends in the designer rings currently seen in fashion shows and through designer collections continue to include the large, chunky rings that really make a statement. While the majority feature gold, there are also many in platinum, white gold and silver, with natural and synthesized gems. Unlike many of the older styles of rings there is typically one gemstone, not a collection or grouping. These rings are really the latest in fashion trends in the high end lines, with enamel, cut crystal and large semi-precious gems the most popular accent in the ring.

One of the biggest fashion trends in the more expensive jewelry lines is away from the chandelier type earrings towards more sleek and minimal type designs. These can include larger hoop type earrings or even longer, thinner styles of earrings that are also of various lengths to compliment any hairstyle and face shape. Earrings may be all precious metal or may have small, discrete gemstones to add color and dazzle. Emphasis is on the movement of the earrings, not just on the glitz and glamour. Smaller stud type diamond earrings are more evident in the high end fashion lines, some with colored diamonds to add that individual look.

Starflyer 59 follows up the best record of their career, 2001’s Leave Here a Stranger, with an album that sounds like a continuation of that fine disc. The same minor chords, breathy vocals, atmospheric production, and overall shoegaze sensibility prevail here. The arrangements are lovingly crafted, very dense, and packed with all kinds of guitars, Hammond organ, lush background vocals, percussion of all types, and nice surprises like tubular bells and occasional synth drums. Every nook and cranny is filled with sound that never overwhelms but rather creates a warm blanket of sound, wrapping the listener up in guitars and the intimate vocals of Jason Martin. The songs are all well-crafted and memorable; the new wave-inflected “New Wife, New Life,” the sad “Major Awards,” and the best song here, “Pasengers,” are as good as anything Starflyer 59 has done. That’s saying a lot. Lyrically, Martin seems obsessed with growing older on Old; on the piano- and treated-organ-based title track and the AOR ballad “First Heart Attack,” which soars like a cut from a Boston record, he sounds like he is two steps from the grave. Don’t let him fool you though– the music on Old is young and alive. Starflyer 59 doesn’t get much hype, but they are one of the best guitar pop bands around and this album is a solid addition to their impressive body of work. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music GuidePerformers: Jeff Cloud – Bass; Frank Lenz – Drums, Vocals (Background); Jason Martin – Guitar, Vocals; Robert Swift – Keyboards, Vocals (Background)

He meets it with courage and humor, and  learns some of life’s hard but precious lessons as he  does.

Everything Is Fine

Everything Is Fine

The man with the biggest, most distinctive bass voice in country since Johnny Cash is back with album number three. Josh Turner scored big with the “Long Black Train” on his debut and took it over the top with the two big singles off his breakthrough sophomore album “Your Man,” (the title track) and the monstrous hit “Would You Go with Me.” While it’s true that Turner kept producer Frank Rogers on board, along with mixing king Justin Niebank and many of the same musicians, there is still more of his actual personality on Everything Is Fine than on his previous albums put together. Interestingly, Turner has made very few concessions to the modern Nashville sound of big rolling guitars that are compressed to the point of being brittle, echo-laden drums and Hammond B-3s that all try to simulate the ’70s sound of Southern rock. The opposite is true here. Turner is a country singer from the old school whose singing can be traced back through Randy Travis and George Strait to Merle Haggard, George Jones, and the great honky tonk singers. If anything, the music on Everything Is Fine is what Nashville’s hit music should sound like in the 21st century. It uses the best technology has to offer in terms of clarity, but not at the expense of acoustic and electric stringed musical instruments sounding like themselves: Telecasters sound like Telecasters, pedal steel guitars sound like Sho-Bud’s, banjos, mandolins, and unplugged six-strings, all come off sounding natural. But that’s only the production angle. It’s songs that make a record and this set is stacked with them. Turner wrote or co-wrote seven of the dozen tunes here. These include the sizzling fiddle and electric guitar stomping shuffle of “Firecracker,” written with Shawn Camp (another part of the steady stable here) and Pat McLaughlin, and the banjo, steel, fiddle-drenched title number that opens the set (with Wes Hightower’s backing vocals that double up the down-low basso profundo to stellar effect). It’s an honest to goodness country song that is picaresque, relaxed, and feels authentic. Then there’s his “only-in-country” burning, modern honky tonker “Trailerhood.” There’s a moving duet with Trisha Yearwood on “Another Try,” written by Jeremy Spillman and Chris Stapleton. It’s a love song with gorgeous dobro and fiddles that build to a crescendo of strings (countrypolitan did a lot of that once upon a time) whose sound is the only concession to the postmodern, post-country sonics of modern Music City, but, since it’s a ballad, they are entirely appropriate and effective It’s a destined hit. Yearwood, who is singing better in 2007 that at any time in her career (perhaps because she is unfettered by no longer being part of the “star system”), adds exponentially to this song emotionally and texturally. And Turner can write a love song: “Soulmate” is among the most direct and spare tunes in his résumé, but its natural soul and depth is refreshing and clean as well as romantic. There’s also a p

"Feminist film theory will soon be a quarter of a century old. It has known the euphoria of the 1970s, experienced the contradictions of the 1980s, and glimpsed the reversals and political gains, which include women of color, of the 1990s." But, Patricia Mellencamp asks, what is the next move? In this challenging look at twenty years of feminist film theory, Mellencamp elaborates on its rich history, drawing on her personal academic life, and offering inventive readings of a remarkable variety of films: recent Hollywood releases like Forest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Thelma and Louise, Basic Instinct, and Silence of the Lambs, and features and independent films made by women, such as The Piano, Angie, Orlando, Bedevil, Daughters of the Dust, Privilege, and Forbidden Love. With a clever sense of irony and wit, Mellencamp poses a question from which her analysis takes off: What did Rapunzel, Cinderella and Snow White forget to tell Thelma and Louise? According to Mellencamp, they forgot what comes after "the end," after the wedding to the prince. So many women’s stories, often by choice, stop after the prince whisks the princess away to live happily ever after. This book asks, what does "happily" mean for women? And what does "ever after" cost women? This creative call to shift film feminism’s infamous "gaze" from sex and bodies to money and work ascertains where film feminism has been and what it needs to progress. Rather than recycling and regaining the same ground, Mellencamp urges film feminism to explore and claim new territory.

The Last Fine Time

The Last Fine Time

$12.98

By turns, an elegy, a celebration, and a social history, The Last Fine Time is a tour de force of lyrical style. Verlyn Klinkenborg chronicles the life of a family-owned restaurant in Buffalo, New York, from its days as a prewar Polish tavern to its reincarnation as George & Eddie’s, a swank nightspot serving highballs and French-fried shrimp to a generation of optimistic and prosperous Americans. In the inevitable dimming of the neon sign outside the restaurant, we see both the passing of an old world way of life and the end to the postwar exuberance that was Eddie Wenzek’s "last fine time."

A Fine Romance – The Complete Collection

$43.98

From the vaults of British television comes a comedy gem starring two consummate actors who were also a couple in real life: Dame Judi Dench (Iris, Shakespeare in Love) and her husband Michael Williams (Educating Rita). They play a pair of middle-aged, dating-game dropouts as wary of romance as they are perfect for each other. Laura, a brainy translator, and Mike, a shy landscape gardener, are introduced by Laura’s glamorous younger sister, who is intent on finding a mate for her spinsterish sibling. Awkward and rumpled, Mike drives an old wreck and fails to impress the prickly Laura. Still, Mike senses an opportunity, if only he can find the courage to pursue it. From this unpromising beginning, the pair lurch and swerve their way to companionship, friendship, and, finally, love. This is a fine, funny, and all-too-real romance. Written by Bob Larbey (As Time Goes By). DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE cast and crew biographies and episode selection.

Buster tutors Stanley on the finer points of Sherlock Holmes, the blues, and life’s lost dreams. But not every buried thing stays dead. And in one terrifying night of rushing creek water and thundering rain, an arcane murderous force will rise from the past to threaten the boy — and test the limits of Buster’s strength and wisdom. Fine Art of the West

Fine Art of the West

$56.48

This landmark study delves into the traditional arts and crafts fo the wild American West and their lasting effects on contemporary design. Visually breathtaking, Fine Art of the West brings together the most artistically significant objects created by master craftsmen from the mid-nineteenth century to today. B. Byron Price, a leading expert of Western American art, explores the fascinating origins of these objects in the Old West, as the legacy of Spanish-American craftsmen and the workaday equipment of cowboys. The story continues as he traces their influence upon innovative designers employing them as a basis for a new, vigorous tradition in decorative art. Working saddles and their offspring: the trophy, parade, and presentation saddles are discussed in depth and appear in stunning full-page reproductions, complemented by a definitive selection of chaps, cuffs, gauntlets, and gun leather. Price also focuses on quirts and other objects that illustrate artistry with hide and hair, as well as fine metalwork, including buckles, bits, spurs, and jewelry. Hats and boots, workaday and fancy, conclude the survey. Contemporary craftsmen who carry on these traditions today are represented alongside illustrations of their work. A glossary and bibliography complete this first comprehensive look at one of America’s most fascinating forms of artistic expression. Other Details: 200 color and 75 b&w photographs

Old Kyoto

Old Kyoto

$17.48

A completely revised version of the classic guidebook to Kyoto, with a foreword by Donald Richie. Down the cobbled paths and behind the tranquil noren curtains of Kyoto, the old way of life goes on, nurtured in the restrained furnishings of the traditional inns and in the old shops where fine handmade items still add a touch of quality to life. Since the first edition appeared in 1986, this lovingly written travelogue-cum-guidebook has become de rigueur for knowledgeable travelers seeking to find "the real Kyoto" behind the modern face of the city’s constantly changing boulevards. Old Kyoto focuses on the family establishments that have been in business for at least a hundred years, and in some cases for over ten generations. Astonishingly, many of the old shops and inns of Kyoto can still be found on narrow backstreets, under the heavy, tiled rooftops of traditional machiya dwellings. Here, the adventurous traveler will uncover treasures: the way in which a hand-crafted calligraphy brush is bound, a miniature garden tended, a bamboo basket woven. For critics and travelers alike, Old Kyoto has long been regarded the essential guidebook to Japan’s most cherished city. This second edition of Old Kyoto is completely updated. Shops have been added, and maps, prices, directions, descriptions, and general information have all been thoroughly revised.

The Fine Art of Smuggling

The Fine Art of Smuggling

$17.48

THE book on 18th Century Smuggling. Written by one of the leading authorities on nautical history. It is difficult to pick up a modern nautical adventure series without at some point coming across a plot line that deals with "The Smugglers." Whether the hero of the story is "for `em" or "again `em," the plot lines will be there. But who were these smugglers? How did they become so successful? How did the King’s Revenue Service try to stop them; and why was it all so important? E. Keble Chatterton has written the definitive book on this period. Working from old manuscripts, logs and journals, he has reconstructed the details of how it worked–and why it worked the way it did. Sometimes the King’s cutters chased the smugglers–and sometimes the smugglers (literally) chased the King’s cutters. Either way, it was a wild time in Britain’s nautical history. The Fine Art of Smuggling is based on Chatterton’s 1912 book: King’s Cutters and Smugglers: 1700-1855, and is being reissued here as a Fireship Press Contemporized Classic.(tm) With 33 Illustrations.

The time is the summer of 1958. The place is Dewmont, Texas, a town that the great American postwar boom has somehow passed by. A sad, hollow beat trails the kids who tune into rockabilly on the radio and waste their weekends at the Dairy Queen. And an undetected menace simmers under the heat that clings to the skin like thin molasses. For blissfully ignorant thirteen-year-old Stanley Mitchell, the end of innocence comes with his discovery of an old trove of passionate yet troubled love letters that lead him to a long-ago house fire and the tragic deaths of two very different young women. Obsessed with investigating their fates, Stanley finds a guide and mentor in black, elderly Buster Lighthouse Smith, a retired Indian Reservation policeman who now runs the projector at the drive-in theater owned by Stanley’s parents. The laconic Buster tutors Stanley on the finer points of Sherlock Holmes, the blues, and life’s lost dreams. But not every buried thing stays dead. And in one terrifying night of rushing creek water and thundering rain, an arcane, murderous force will suddenly rise from the past to threaten the boy – and test the limits of Buster’s strength and wisdom. In the end the old man teaches Stanley a lesson that will haunt him always, about the forever short distance between living flesh and the dust from which it came.

A Fine Day to Exit

A Fine Day to Exit

$17.98

Lush isn’t an adjective that one would have used to describe Anathema in the early to mid-’90s; back then, the British band was often described as blistering, ferocious, and brutal. But Anathema has changed considerably since then, and 2001’s A Fine Day to Exit is, in fact, a lush and highly melodic effort that has very little in common with their early releases. While the old Anathema was an underground metal band, this CD has nothing to do with metal — even those who have an extremely broad definition of the term heavy metal would agree there’s no way that A Fine Day to Exit should be described as metal. Anathema has evolved into an atmospheric, moody, spacey alternative rock outfit whose influences range from Radiohead to Pink Floyd to the Beatles to various goth rockers; without question, Anathema has reinvented themselves in a major way. Whether or not this change is a good thing depends on one’s point of view; headbangers who only want to hear a metal-oriented Anathema will no doubt resent the fact that tracks like “Underworld” and “Looking Outside Inside” have nothing to do with metal. But those who keep an open mind and respect Anathema’s right to evolve will find that this album has a great deal to offer. The only thing about Anathema that hasn’t changed is their desire to provide dark, gloomy lyrics; as much as the band has evolved musically, they haven’t lost their fascination with the dark side. A Fine Day to Exit may not be the album that headbangers dream of, but it’s a pleasing chapter in the evolution of Anathema. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music GuidePerformers: Daniel Cavanagh – Guitar (Electric); Dave – Bass; John Enrico Douglas – Drums; Leon Douglas – Vocals

Conversing in a mausoleum with the dead, an eccentric recluse is tugged back into the world by a pair of ghostly lovers bearing an extraordinary gift–the final chance for his own happiness. When challenged by a faithless wife and aided by a talking raven, the lives of the living and the dead may be renewed by courage and passion, but only if not belatedly. Told with an elegiac wisdom, this delightful tale of magic and otherworldly love is a timeless work of fantasy imbued with hope and wonder. After multiple printings since 1960, this newest edition will contain the author’s recent revisions and will stand as the definitive version of an ageless classic. Questions for Peter S. Beagle Jeff VanderMeer for Amazon.com: When you were writing A Fine and Private Place, did you have any idea it was going to have such staying power? Beagle: No. Not at all, of course. When I was 19 years old I never thought in terms of classics or being permanently around. I’d known enough writers, even at that age, to see that what happens to your work is so far out of your control you simply can’t afford to let that kind of concern enter your thinking. Beagle: I think that A Fine and Private Place is very nearly, though not quite, my first attempt to capture the voices in the Bronx neighborhood where I grew up. Nobody is based on any one person, but there’s a piece here and a piece there was useful. I hung fire on creating Laura Durant, when it came time to bring her into the story, until I decided to base her physically–not emotionally, but physically–on a Pittsburgh actress I was in a play with. I just didn’t know enough young women in those days. And there are scenes in there which people from the old neighborhood would recognize–when Mrs. Klapper goes into the Wireman’s grocery, that …
