Mozart: The Violin Sonatas $30.98 Originally released in the 1980s as separate albums and as a box set in 1991, Mozart’s Violin Sonatas have been reissued here as a special collector’s edition. Aside from the changed packaging, this sleek four-disc set is identical to the first but provides greater value at the reduced price. In these sonatas for keyboard and violin, the piano dominates as the violin often tags along in unison with the piano’s melody, rarely departing from it except in an ornamental capacity. Even so, Itzhak Perlman brings his customary good humor and energy to these pieces, and through his vibrant and spirited playing makes the violin’s obbligato more or less equal to the pianist’s elaborate part. Daniel Barenboim displays a great deal of verve and spontaneity in his ever-shifting roles as soloist and accompanist. His playing is clean and always precise, yet genuine warmth comes through, no doubt because playing with Perlman must have been an unalloyed joy. The friendship and communication between these two musicians clearly contributed to the success of these exemplary performances, which remain an essential offering in the catalog. Barber & Meyer: Violin Concertos $9.98 This is the premiere recording of a successful new American violin concerto. This recording of the concerto by composer and double bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer was made in Ordway Hall, Saint Paul, Minnesota on September 27, 1999, shortly after its world premiere.The same artists made the recording: The young American virtuoso Hillary Hahn (for whom the work was written) and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra under Hugh Wolff. The Concerto is uncommonly tuneful and tonal for a 20th Century Concerto, and should repeat on CD the success it has had in the concert hall.Hahn is confident and authoritative in her concerto. She has a bright silken-silvery sound. She applies vibrato very lightly and quickly, resulting in a very pure effect. While the melodic style of the concerto is very American, with passages the recall middle-USA hymns and folk material, this is evidently Meyer’s natural voice rather than an attempt to make an ethnic American impression, they way such material usually songs in the works of Copland and his generation.Thus Hahn is correct to make no effort in this recording to sound folkish or “American.” The support from Wolff and the chamber orchestra is very alert and supportive.
